The details that give it away

Outlet cuts that are square and covered by the plate. Tile that dies cleanly into the upper cabinets instead of ending in a ragged row. A finished edge at the open end, either a bullnose, a metal trim or a mitered corner, not a strip of caulk. Consistent grout lines across the whole run, including behind the range where people stop paying attention.

Handmade and uneven tile

Zellige, cement and handmade ceramic are popular right now and they do not behave like a factory tile. The edges vary, the thickness varies, and laying them like subway tile gives you a wall that looks wrong without anyone being able to say why. They need a different spacing approach and more time. We will tell you honestly what a given tile will cost in labor before you buy it.

Timeline
