What a shower actually needs
Cement board over the studs. A full waterproofing membrane bonded across the board, not just painted in the corners. A pan sloped correctly to the drain so water leaves instead of sitting. Corners, seams and the drain flange sealed. Only then does tile go on. Skip any one of those and the shower still looks perfect on day one, which is exactly the problem.
Why the ceiling downstairs is the first sign
A shower that was not waterproofed does not announce itself. Water gets past the grout, which it always does eventually, soaks the board, and works its way into the framing. You find out eighteen months later when a stain appears on the ceiling below. By then the fix is not regrouting, it is opening the wall.
How long it takes
Anyone who tells you a shower is a one-day job is either not waterproofing it or not letting it cure. Demo and prep take a day. Membrane goes on and has to actually dry. Then tile, then grout, then grout cures. Most showers run three to five days start to finish, and we give you the schedule before we start.
