Porcelain & Large Format Tile
Large format tile makes a small room look bigger because there is less grout breaking it up. It is also the least forgiving product in the trade, because a floor that was fine for twelve inch tile will lip every single twenty-four inch one.
The substrate has to be genuinely flat
Industry tolerance tightens as tile gets bigger. A dip that a small tile bridges without complaint becomes a visible lip on a large panel, and you feel it underfoot every time you cross it. Large format almost always means flattening the floor first. We price that in honestly rather than discovering it on day two.
Leveling clips, and full coverage underneath
We use a leveling system so adjacent tiles set flush while the thinset cures. And we back-butter, because a large tile needs full contact underneath. Voids under a big porcelain panel are where cracks start, usually right where somebody eventually drops something.
Offset, not brick pattern
Long planks and large panels have a slight bow through the middle, every manufacturer's do. Lay them in a fifty percent brick offset and the high point of one lands against the low point of its neighbor, which is how you get lippage on a perfectly flat floor. A third offset or straight stack solves it.
